FIVE WAYS TRAVEL HAS CHANGED IN 2020

We were lucky enough to get away to Italy this year. It seems we timed it perfectly; no quarantine, no extra measures, just a lot of face mask wearing. But it does feel like we were some of the lucky ones. Collectively we’ve had around five trips cancelled or postponed indefinitely. As we thought 2020 would be the year we not only holidayed as normal, but also went on a big Columbia trip-it really isn’t turning out how we had first expected. We take a look at what we imagine will be changes to the travel industry.

PEOPLE WILL GO ON MORE DREAM TRIPS

You’ve heard it from loads of people. I’ve always wanted to visit India, I would love to go to South America. A lot of people never followed through on these big plans because it felt like the travel industry wasn’t going anywhere. An immediate halt to non essential travel, meant that to a lot of people this access to a dream trip was taken away. Now it wasn’t the ‘not getting round to it’ that was stopping people from travelling; having the option taken away will have made a lot of people decide that when it wasn’t their choice – that trip has now become far more important. We imagine there will be a lot of bucket list trips booked in the coming months and years.

PEOPLE WILL BE MORE MINDFUL WHEN DECIDING WHERE TO GO

Sometimes you just feel like you need a holiday. It’s not so much about the why or the where, more about getting away. This trend of a holiday for a holiday may have seen the last of its popularity. With such strict regulations on where you can go, people are putting a lot more thought into their time away. More research and more mindfulness goes into holiday planning now; people are also turning away from third parties as the lack of control doesn’t feed into this new need to understand everything about your time away. We hope this slower approach to a holiday will continue long after the pandemic is over, understanding your choices and making the most of the places you visit is very high on our list of importance when booking time away.

CLEANLINESS WILL BE A HUGE FACTOR

This one kind of goes without saying but we’ll say it anyway. Cleanliness and hygiene will be big factors when deciding where to stay. Customer reviews will be scrutinised more as people want to book places they feel safe knowing have done everything they can to make the place as safe and sanitised as possible. This may see a lean towards more corporate hotels, with an imagined ideal that the bigger the budget the better the cleaning service. We personally don’t vouch for this however. A lot of AirBnB owners have taken it upon themselves to put incredible cleaning and safety measures in place. From hazmat bags for bedding to contact free check in’s; we hope that everyone remembers that the smaller guys can actually put time into the attention to detail.

TRAVELLING TO SEE FRIENDS AND FAMILY WILL INCREASE

Over half of Brits have family and friends abroad. Some may have been able to get on the sparse flights back to England at the beginning of lockdown, but many will have not been able to. This separation will have boosted the need for families and friends to see each other once restrictions are lifted. With the uncertainty around areas and cleanliness, going to visit someone you know and are able to stay with will be as appealing as ever! And if you can;t get back to the country because the travel corridors are closed, at least you will have somewhere to stay while you wait out the time.

STAYCATIONING IS HERE TO STAY

It almost goes without saying that staycations are on the up. With the possibility of having to quarantine being so much lower than if you leave the UK; a staycation is a great option for a lot of people. Popular spots like Cornwall, the Lake District and the East Coast got booked up pretty quickly once people could move around. The freedom to drive places and not have to get on a busy train, coupled with the lack of elongated airport security and constant fear of new quarantine measures means that the staycation is a safer short term option. There is something beautiful within this though. The UK often gets overlooked for more glamorous locations but there is so much for people to explore right here on this great island.

And with staycationing still on the rise we expect a lot of people to be spending their time exploring their own cities. Our Tailored and Made days can be booked bespoke for wherever you are in the country. Get in touch to find out more.
